The Commonwealth of Kentucky awarded a contract to Infinite Campus, Inc. in December 2006 to provide and manage the student information system (SIS) for the state's 174 local school districts and schools. The implementation of this SIS is underway. KDE worked closely with districts and advisory groups to develop our SIS readiness/implementation plan. The plan includes steps for a smooth transition with specific dates. During the implementation of the new SIS, KDE will fund the acquisition of new hardware and software.
Next Generation SIS
In the next generation SIS system, student data will be managed through a centralized database, providing real-time information to those who are authorized to view it. When an authorized user enters data into the system, other authorized users can view the changed data immediately.
What Districts Can Expect
Infinite Campus and KDE will provide appropriate support throughout transition and implementation. The IC system has many advantages, including:
-
A web-based system that allows authorized users to access grade books, lesson plans, Individual Education Plans and more from almost any workstation with Internet access.
-
System may be accessed on both Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
-
System provides data in real time to the school, district and state.
-
Easy management of student transfers, grade promotions and more -- from year to year.
Existing state student IDs will be converted, with easy ability to assign IDs to new students. Local student IDs may be retained for internal use.
-
System uses the widely supported Microsoft SQL Server database at all levels.
-
Support is available via phone nearly every day of the year from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST.
-
Online help within the application and web support are also available.
Pilot and State-Wide District Implementation Schedules
Pilot Districts
KDE has worked with Infinite Campus to refine the new SIS and test it thoroughly before it is implemented throughout the Commonwealth. Based on the success of this testing, Jefferson County implemented the new SIS in July 2007 and the pilot districts went live in October 2007.
Wave District Schedules
Following the success of the pilot projects, district implementation will occur in waves. Please click on the link above for more information.
IC Training
Infinite Campus provides an in-depth certification process and curriculum for district personnel. Requirements for completing and maintaining certifications as well as the time commitment, content, and target audience of each certification course are described in the link to the IC Training document above.
High quality, role-based training is critical to the success of this project. As part of implementation planning, Infinite Campus worked with the core team to determine which staff members should be assigned to which training roles. This helped determine the appropriate training schedule for Kentucky districts.
