During the week of June 21-25, 2004, teachers in the Knott County School system were provided with the opportunity to participate in the "I'm a Math Master" Math Academy. This professional development gave teachers the chance to work together with other teachers at the same grade level but from different schools from across our county to develop a unit of study. The unit of study our school district completed was on "Statistics." This was a weak area across the county. Every grade level from kindergarten through high school completed a unit on Statistics.
Our task of completing a well developed unit began by us working together as a team. We compiled our previous units on Statistics. We talked about the order in which we needed to teach the content. We made sure that we taught all the necessary skills and concepts needed at fourth grade. We looked at the Core Content, Program of Studies, our District Curriculum Map, and the Core Content for Math Assessment, the Grade 4 Vertical Alignment draft version. We compiled our unit using our new resources that were provided to us during this academy, as well as resources we already had available. We shared ideas and materials that we each felt were excellent opportunities for the students to become successful at mathematics. The Statistics Unit our team completed is one that we can use and revisit again to add or make changes as needed. Sharing ideas and working together helped us to develop a unit of study that will allow our students to become Math Masters.
