Resources from the Kentucky Department of Education:

Developing Quality Open Response and Multiple Choice Items for the Classroom

KDE’s Open Response Questions in the Classroom manual has been revised. The updated manual now contains guidance for constructing both KCCT-like open response and multiple choice items. Tips for creating scoring guides and improving classroom practice, as well as an electronic open response template are also included.

Sample Curriculum Maps

Curriculum maps offer a sequence for delivering content and provide a clear scope for what must be taught to all students, based on Kentucky's curriculum documents. They can be aligned both horizontally and vertically, organizing content, skills, assessments, and resources over time. A curriculum map can also serve as a tool for collecting data about the implemented curriculum in a school and in a district—the instruction that students are experiencing. By mapping what's actually taught and when it's taught, teachers produce data that can be used with assessment data to make modifications in instruction (Educational Leadership, December 2003/January 2004). Since curriculum decisions are made at the local level, we are including models only to assist schools with their curriculum work. The curriculum maps included on this Web site show a variety of approaches to curriculum mapping.

Standards-Based Units of Study

Standards-based Units of Study provide comprehensive learning opportunities for students. Using standards, (e.g., Kentucky's Academic Expectations, Program of Studies, and Core Content for Assessment), as the basis for a unit focuses planning on meaningful and relevant concepts. The unit plan, in turn, enhances the delivery of instruction and assessment.

The Mathematics Program Effectiveness Review for Kentucky Schools is a checklist of "best practices" for mathematics education in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It has been closely aligned with the Standards and Indicators for School Improvement document. It has been designed so that a person could walk through a school, interview teachers, and review school wide documents and develop evidence as to the effectiveness of the mathematics education program in a school.
